An appeal for Bicycles

Just outside of Vrindavan, in a village called Nagala Sumera, there are nine young women who so desperately want an education that are walking three hours per day, to get to college. These women are from poor families and they know that unless they fight to get an education, their lives will be no better than that of their parents.

We invited them to come to our school so that we can take their picture and tell their story in the hope that someone will help in their struggle to gain economic independence. If they simply had bicycles, their travel time would be reduced to 45 minutes per day instead of 2 or 3 hours. This would give them more time to study, which already often has to take second place to helping their parents out with duties on the farm, washing clothes by hand and helping to take care of smaller children. It would also give them heart to know that someone they have never met cares about their situation.

Those who are waiting for someone to sponsor a bicycle for them are:

Vimlis Singh, age 16, Mamta Kumari, Age 17, Soniya Kumari, age 18, Nitu Kamari, age 16, Rina Kumari, Bevi Kumari age 17, Suma Kumari, age 18, Punam Kumari, age 18, Bavita Kumari, age 18
They all have to walk 12 km which takes about 3 hours for the journey daily.

Here at Food For Life Vindavan (FFLV), we do our best to support the education of females as they are discriminated against in their families who are not enthusiastic for them to get educated. Girls are often seen as less important as after marriage they will be considered as part of their husband's family and will not help to financially support their family of origin. Despite these obstacles, through our support and encouragement, two girls from Nagala Sumera village have already attained bachelors degrees. We hope that we can also support these nine girls in finishing high school and continuing on to further education and brighter futures.

Bicycles cost US$65 each, for US $595 you can support the future of all nine girls.

If you are willing to help with any amount please email us at your earliest:
