After completing her treatment, Laxmi (blog case June 29) has left the care of Food for Life Vrindavan.
We would have liked to continue her rehabilitation and given her a safe place to live, however it seems she had become accustomed to living on the streets was not ready for the regulated life of Sandipani Muni Children's home and school.
Several days ago, Laxmi absconded from school and has not returned. We are happy that we were able to save her from the pain and suffering that her infected arm was causing her and show her that there are some people who care for her.
Thank you all for helping her. We will keep you updated on any further developments.
2nd Update on Laxmi
Thanks to the kind help of blog readers and the efforts of staff at Food for Life Vrindavan, Laxmi is feeling much better. She is out of hospital and living in Sandipani Muni Children's home. Today, for the first time, she attended Sandipani Muni school.Because of the tough circumstances she has come from (see blogpost 29th June 2009) it will take Laxmi some time to adjust. For example, the staff member I sent to take this photo of her reported that Laxmi asked for two rupees in return for posing for the photograph.
As well as donations, kind blogviewers have sent Laxmi letters and gifts. We are confident that with this kind of care and affection, Laxmi will continue to heal, both physically and mentally.
The next step in her care is to undergo physiotherapy on both hands. Laxmi's left hand is still recovering from being burnt and her right hand is also damaged, possibly due to her having been restrained by her arm for long periods.
Update on Laxmi

Laxmi continues to recover and has been transferred to the Food for Life Vrindavan medical center where she can rest and recouperate while the resident doctor at the center, Dr Jha, continues to clean and dress her wound. Dr Jha said that there are signs that the infection is healing and that Laxmi should be able to leave hospital within one month.
This is quite an amazing recovery since the burn was infected and left unhealed for over a year. In many cases, gangrene enters the bone and the limb has to be cut off, so Laxmi is quite lucky. With your help and support, her future is secure.
Laxmi - Progress report

Dear kind blog viewers and supporters,
I am pleased to inform you that, thanks to hospital care and bedrest as well as several surgeries and antibiotics, Laxmi's burnt hand is looking better. Despite initial fears, her arm will not need to be removed and, in around 1-2 months she will be ready to leave hospital and start her new life at the Sandipani Muni Children's home.
Laxmi will need a lot of TLC when she joins the Food for Life Vrindavan family. She was out on the streets for over a year and has been betrayed by many people who promised to help. Laxmi told Food for Life staff members that a man promised to get treatment for her but instead he made her beg on the streets and would take the money from her every evening.
We are still needing to raise funds for Laxmi's medical treatment. Please email Rupa@fflvrindavan.org for more information on how you can help.
